What steps should I take to find work in the film or telivision industry?
Rossem asked:
I am going to move to LA in the summer, after I get my degree in mass communication, in oklahoma. I want to get into production or editing. I’m hoping to hear from someone who may have some suggestions about steps I should take to land such a job.

In the entertainment industry in Los Angeles it is definetly not what you know but WHO you know.
If you have any contacts in Los Angeles, use them to the max.
Good luck
Knock and keep on knocking everyday until you get in thats it and thats all friend.
Check out paid internships for the studios as a start. that is how my daughter is getting her foot in the door.
Temping can be a great way to get your foot in the door. I work at a large talent agency and I got in via a temp agency. There are several temp agencies that specialize in the entertainment industry, such as friedman personnel. Check it out.
Seek out independent production companies for internships or production assistant positions. You can also try the studios to see if they are hiring for any production or editing positions. Good luck.
Have another plan (job) before you get here.
The Industry is extremely competitive.
Volunteer for ALL of the film festivals. Be very helpful. You will get automatic job offers that way.
I volunteer for ethnic film festivals for fun (I’m not in the industry). Everytime I help a director or screenwriter, they offer me a job.
you need to intern for free. get the hollywood creative directory and call everyone. tell them you are graduating college and would like to intern a few hours a week. Try and line a few up so that you can work at different places and get to know more people.
Eventually, a job will become available. (runner, prod. assistant, mailroom dude) And if someone knows you, they will hire you. It’s all about personal relationships and people you know…not how qualified or great your resume is..unfortunately.
So be prepared to put some time in for free.
